Case Study: Supporting Ilkley Clean River Group with Secure, Cost-Effective Cloud Hosting
Challenge
The Ilkley Clean River Group is a not-for-profit community organisation dedicated to protecting the health of the River Wharfe, campaigning to stop raw sewage discharge and ensure the river is safe for wildlife and the local community.
As a volunteer-led organisation reliant on donations, the Group needed to minimise operational costs wherever possible. Its website played a key role in supporting awareness and campaigning, but hosting costs were disproportionately high relative to its limited budget.
In addition to cost pressures, there were concerns around website security. With limited in-house technical expertise and no dedicated IT function, the Group lacked clarity on how best to improve both cost efficiency and security posture. This created uncertainty around whether the existing setup was sustainable, secure, or aligned with best practice.
Solution
Cloudscaler was engaged to review the Group’s existing hosting approach and recommend a more cost-effective and secure alternative.
Following an assessment, Cloudscaler proposed migrating the website to AWS, leveraging a simplified and scalable hosting model alongside built-in security services. The Group’s WordPress website was migrated into a new AWS Lightsail environment, providing a balance of performance, simplicity, and affordability.
The deployment was delivered using Cloudscaler’s Enterprise Cloud Platform (ECP), a foundational landing zone designed to embed security and governance controls from the outset. This included the integration of key AWS-native security services such as AWS Security Hub and AWS Config, alongside the application of cloud security best practices.
The result was a secure, standardised environment that required minimal ongoing management, making it well-suited to a volunteer-led organisation.
Benefits
The migration was completed seamlessly, with minimal downtime and no disruption to users. The entire transition was executed in a matter of minutes, ensuring continuity for the Group’s online presence.
Most significantly, the move to AWS reduced hosting costs by approximately 95%, delivering immediate and meaningful financial savings. These savings directly support the Group’s mission by allowing more funding to be directed towards environmental campaigning rather than IT overhead.
Security was also substantially improved. With AWS-native services and Cloudscaler’s platform controls in place, the website now benefits from continuous monitoring and enhanced protection, without introducing additional cost or complexity.
By removing the burden of infrastructure management and reducing risk, the Group can now focus its time and energy on its core mission rather than maintaining its IT environment.
Value
Cloudscaler’s value lay in delivering a solution that was not only technically sound, but also proportionate to the needs of a small, volunteer-driven organisation.
Rather than over-engineering the solution, the approach focused on simplicity, cost-efficiency, and embedded security. By leveraging AWS Lightsail in combination with the Enterprise Cloud Platform, Cloudscaler provided a production-ready environment with enterprise-grade controls, without the overhead typically associated with such capabilities.
As part of Cloudscaler’s Giving Back initiative, the services were provided free of charge, further maximising the positive impact for the organisation. This ensured that the Group could benefit from modern cloud capabilities without financial or technical barriers.
Lessons Learned
This engagement highlights that effective cloud solutions are not limited to large enterprises. With the right approach, even small, resource-constrained organisations can benefit from secure, scalable, and cost-efficient cloud platforms.
It also reinforces the importance of aligning technology decisions with organisational context. For volunteer-led groups, simplicity and low operational overhead are just as critical as security and performance.
Finally, the case demonstrates that significant cost savings and security improvements can be achieved simultaneously when cloud services are implemented with clear design principles and best practices from the outset.
For the Ilkley Clean River Group, this transformation has enabled a shift away from IT concerns and towards its primary goal: protecting the River Wharfe for future generations.
Testimonial
“Supporting organisations like the Ilkley Clean River Group is exactly what our Giving Back initiative is about. This was a great example of how the right cloud approach can deliver immediate, meaningful impact — significantly reducing costs while improving security at the same time.
By using AWS Lightsail alongside our Enterprise Cloud Platform, we were able to provide a solution that’s simple to operate, secure by design, and proportionate to the needs of a volunteer-led organisation. It means the Group can focus on what really matters — protecting the River Wharfe — without worrying about their technology.
It’s a reminder that cloud, when done properly, isn’t just for large enterprises. It can be a powerful enabler for organisations of any size.”
